Campbell Sharp, Whitewashes Fog, 7-0
Thursday, September 23rd , 1897
The London Fog had no answer today for Winchester Barons pitcher Oscar Campbell. They failed to score a single run against him, losing 7-0. London managed only 3 hits off Campbell, who had 6 strikeouts.
The extraordinarily popular Campbell got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.
"Barons fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
For the season Campbell has compiled a 22-9 record with a 2.64 ERA.
