Newport Shuts Out Swansea Behind Kennedy, 5-0 Monday, September 6th , 1897 Newport Stevedores hurler Downey Kennedy was stingy with runs in his latest outing against the Swansea Copper Lords, shutting them out 5-0 on 4 hits. "Downey was very aggressive tonight," Newport manager Diego Barrios said. "He threw everything he had with a lot of confidence." Through 9 innings, Kennedy tallied 3 strikeouts and allowed 2 walks. "He was throwing strikes with all his pitches and mixing it up well," losing manager Vincent Kempton said.
