Newport Shuts Out Swansea Behind Kennedy, 5-0
Monday, September 6th , 1897
Newport Stevedores hurler Downey Kennedy was stingy with runs in his latest outing against the Swansea Copper Lords, shutting them out 5-0 on 4 hits.
"Downey was very aggressive tonight," Newport manager Diego Barrios said. "He threw everything he had with a lot of confidence."
Through 9 innings, Kennedy tallied 3 strikeouts and allowed 2 walks.
"He was throwing strikes with all his pitches and mixing it up well," losing manager Vincent Kempton said. "Kennedy has a sneaky fastball, and whatever that off-speed pitch was, it was keeping our timing off."
Kennedy has posted a 18-11 record for the year with a 2.57 ERA. Teams are hitting .244 against him and he has rung up 101 strikeouts in 241.2 innings.
