For his spectacular campaign, the Nacogdoches Roaches star has been named the 1897 Association of Eastern Texas Champion of Texas recipient. "To be considered amongst the best in the league is overwhelming," said the center fielder. On the season he compiled a .337 batting average to go with a .419 on-base percentage. The native of Carolina, Puerto Rico also added 23 doubles, 10 triples, 5 home runs, 61 RBIs and 70 runs scored. He received 11 first place votes out of a possible 16. Haffy Beattie of the Luling Lavender Stockings finished second in voting with 5 first place votes, while Timoteo Ortiz of the Nacogdoches Roaches finished third.
