WTXA Best Newcomer Named Sunday, October 24th , 1897 Hugh Spurr, second baseman for the Abilene Preachers, had a good freshman year, highlighted today by his selection for the Association of Western Texas Greenhorn for 1897. The standout Preachers second baseman took the honor by hitting .365 in 91 games this season and finishing with 127 hits, 1 home run, 63 RBIs and 69 runs scored. He received 16 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Benjamin Mullins of the San Angelo Killer Cacti finished second in voting, while Rogelio Hernández of the Wichita Falls Yardmen finished third.
