Championship of Texas Sweep for Odessa Tuesday, October 12th , 1897 The Odessa Cowhands made quick work of the Luling Lavender Stockings in the Championship of Texas, sweeping them aside to clinch the 1st Texan Base-Ball League crown in Cowhands history. Odessa sealed the series today at Cowhands Park with a 5-1 victory. During the regular season play, the Cowhands notched a 53-43 record and wound up in first place in the Association of Western Texas Odessa Circuit race. "I won't say it was easy, because baseball games are rarely easy," said Odessa manager Tomás Reyes. "But I did expect we would have to play a much longer series."
