Roaches McAlear Stops Gulls Tuesday, September 14th , 1897 Brian McAlear dominated the Galveston Gulls with a brilliant 5-hit shutout in a Nacogdoches Roaches 5-0 triumph at Roaches Field. The Nacogdoches hurler fanned 5 and walked 3 in the game and was singled out for praise afterward by the opposing manager. "He really kept us in check today," Gulls skipper Jesús Pagán said in postgame comments. "Everything looked to be moving. Seemed like the pitch was right down the middle and it went over down and away. We took some pathetic swings." For the year McAlear has a 7-6 record with a 3.18 ERA in 13 starts.
