Vélez Wins Torneo del Oriente Pitching Crown Saturday, October 23rd , 1897 It was a glorious year for Jorge Vélez of the Santa Clara Leopardos. He finished the season with 16 victories and only 15 losses, with an impressive 3.34 ERA. The talented Leopardos pitcher started 33 games and struck out 72 batters in 283.1 innings and won the Torneo del Oriente Lanzador Excelentísimo. "It means a lot," Vélez said. "I hadn't really had a chance to sit down and think about it yet. It feels good right now. I can't really put it into words, but I'm sure later on tonight when I have a chance to sit down with my family and think about it, I'll have some words for it. But right now, I'm just happy that it happened this year." He received 12 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Julio César López of the Holguin Pericos finished second in voting, while Nicolás Mayor of the Camaguey Tinajones finished third.
