Goodyear Wins Rookie of the Year Honor Thursday, October 21st , 1897 Rookies are supposed to be seen, but not heard. But that wasn't the case with Matanzas's Cecil Goodyear. He spoke up loudly and often this season on his way to winning the Torneo del Occidente Novato Nobilísimo for 1897. To be accurate, the 22-year-old right fielder let his performance do the talking. In his debut season Goodyear piled up some good stats, hitting .361, driving in 65 runs and scoring 50 times, while playing in 81 games. The Henequeneros newcomer also had 20 doubles, 8 triples and 2 home runs. He received 12 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Ciro Cazares of the Almendares Alacranes finished second in voting, while Roberto Armenta of the Pinar del Rio Guajiros finished third.
