García Torches Guajiros for 5 Hits
Thursday, August 26th , 1897
5 hits in a game has always been a big milestone in baseball -- 5 hits in a game gets a player's name in the record book, win or lose. Erón García got his name recorded today, but the Pinar del Rio Guajiros picked up the win at Estadio de Pinar del Río, topping the Marianao Monjes Grises, 9-7.
"He bushwhacked us," said winning manager Nicolás Durán. "We were lucky to come out ahead."
García, who led the TOCC in hits with 134 in 1893, spoke to reporters in the clubhouse following the game, saying his nerves only set in once he was on the cusp of the milestone.
"I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this could be a once-in-a-lifetime day," the first baseman said. "I think the coaches could tell I was going to be ready to swing at anything close. That's why my third base coach told me to calm down and wait for a good pitch. That got me back on track."
Erón García singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
On the year García has hit .314 with no home runs, 16 RBIs and scored 21 runs.
