1897 Top Player Honored By LB Friday, December 3rd , 1897 At age 37, many would be surprised to see Vicente Veras still contributing strongly in Liga Nacional Puertorriquena. But not only did he contribute, the Maricao Cafeteros first baseman was at the top of the sport, winning the 1897 Liga Betances Jugador Ilustrísimo. He captured the award with a .391 batting average and a .451 on-base percentage this year. In 138 games he piled up 209 hits, 38 doubles, 14 triples, 8 home runs, 94 RBIs and 91 runs scored. Tomás Ramírez of the Dorado Guardianes finished second in voting, while Santiago Tinajero of the Patillas Cuervos finished third. |
