Colonels End Browning's Streak Wednesday, August 18th , 1897 It was the best of both worlds for the Louisville Colonels today at Congress Street Grounds, as they defeated the Boston Reds 5-4 and also snapped Pete Browning's 20-game hitting streak. The 36-year-old Boston second baseman failed to get a hit in 1 at-bat. "Nothing personal against Browning, we just wanted to win the game," said Colonels skipper Pete Treacey. "We did a great job keeping him off-balance and guessing." When asked by reporters about his streak coming to an end, Browning frowned and said, "I won't lie and say that I'm not disappointed about it, but I'd feel much better if we had won." For the season, Browning is hitting at a .379 clip with 6 home runs, 88 RBIs and has scored 92 runs. He has 173 hits, 68 walks and a .458 on-base percentage. |
