The Inverness Thistles picked up a win at Thistles Grounds, knocking off the Aberdeen Granite, 5-1. Starting pitcher Lewis Hopkins was a big reason why. Hopkins went the distance for Inverness. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits. The Granite, 10-11, continue their sluggish start to the 1897 campaign.

The Thistles got an important contribution from catcher Charles Murray, who in the bottom of the fourth knocked a full count fastball into right-center for a 2-run double. It was his 5th double of the season and put the Thistles ahead, 3-0.

Hopkins told the Inverness News: "I was born for the big stage."
