The Belfast Bards beat the Galway Harbourmasters, 5-4. Belfast pitcher and Kirkby, England, native Jay Smith led the way. The Harbourmasters fall to 7-11 and continue their uninspiring start to the 1897 season.
The critical at-bat for Belfast came in the top of the 12th inning. With two out, Smith reached on an error by the 2B, driving in 1 run, putting Belfast up, 5-4.
"It was sure nice to get the win but there's a lot of baseball left," Smith after the game.
