Reds Clip Giants, 3-2
|
The Cincinnati Reds did just enough to sneak past the New York Giants, 3-2, at Polo Grounds 1890-1910. Cincinnati pitcher Peek-A-Boo Veach, in particular, had a standout performance. Veach, now 24-17, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 9 hits, while striking out 3, walking 3, and allowing 2 runs. The 5th-place Reds go to 65-65.
Cincinnati used the timely hitting of Bryan Dowler to seize the win. The center fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Reds on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"I'll probably toss and turn tonight," New York manager Chris Petty said following the tough loss.
