The Boston Beaneaters withstood an impressive performance by St. Louis center fielder Dick Johnston to defeat the Cardinals, 11-8, at South End Grounds 1894-1915. Johnston was 3 for 4 with a triple and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. Bill Sowders snagged the win in relief. In 2.1 innings, the right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit. He's now 4-3 on the season. At 77-48, Boston is in second place in the National League.

Boston first baseman Dan McGann gave his club a productive at-bat in the bottom of the eighth inning. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and the Beaneaters trailing 8-6, McGann hit a 2-run double.
