Bards Saddle Vikings with 4-3 Loss
Crowds lined up early in front of Dublin Grounds, eagerly awaiting the start of the 1897 Great British Base-Off season. On the mound was Alistair Oakley for the visiting Belfast Bards and Roodan Keay for the hometown Dublin Vikings. In a spirited contest, the Bards pulled out the win, defeating the Vikings by the score of 4-3. Especially impressive was Alistair Oakley. Oakley got the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed 10 hits and walked 2 over 9 innings. Oakley allowed 3 runs.

Sarpedón Arisméndez helped out the Belfast cause in the top of the fifth inning with a 2-run double. For the game, the shortstop went 1 for 4 with a double, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.

"I'll probably toss and turn tonight," Dublin manager Lewis Gillies said following the tough loss.
