The 1897 season did not get off to quite the start the Hatillo Ganaderos had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Camuy Murcielagos at Terreno de los Ganaderos. The final score was 8-4. Second Baseman Camilo Ramírez was the top performer for Camuy.

Camuy used the clutch hitting of Fernando Ruiz to capture the win. The shortstop drilled a bases-clearing double in the top of the sixth inning to give the Murcielagos the lead, 7-3. For the game, Ruiz had 1 single and 2 doubles in 5 at-bats.

"We'll hit the hot tub tonight in good spirits tonight," said Ruiz.
