The 1897 season did not get off to quite the start the New York Giants had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Cincinnati Reds at Polo Grounds 1890-1910. The final score was 11-3. Starting Pitcher Peek-A-Boo Veach was the top performer for Cincinnati. Veach went 9 innings to notch the win. He scattered 8 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. His record improves to 1-0.

Jack Boyle, the two-time All-Star , had a direct impact on the outcome. Boyle contributed a 2-run triple in the top of the third inning to put Cincinnati up, 5-3.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Boyle.
