Washington Over St. Louis 3-1, 200th Win for Conway
|
What would you do after you had just won your 200th game? Run around Boundary Field doing cartwheels, jumping for joy and waving to the crowd? Well, maybe you and I would do that, but not Pete Conway -- that's not his way.
After he notched number 200, the 30-year-old Washington hurler spoke to the press like he always has -- in a soft, quiet voice. He wasn't doing any cartwheels or even anything resembling a jump for joy. "Obviously it feels very good," Conway commented. "To win this many games, you've got to have a lot of help."
Conway got his milestone victory by beating the St. Louis Browns 3-1. He held them to 7 hits in 9 innings and rung up 2 strikeouts with 1 walk.
After sharing his thoughts with the press, he went to the clubhouse. There he was greeted by the guys who had helped him get #200. His teammates drenched him and then gave him a rousing round of applause. That got to him -- for the first time today, Conway's face broke into a big smile.
Through the years Conway has fashioned a 200-150 mark, 3.38 ERA and thrown 3123.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .263 lifetime against him and he has logged 853 career strikeouts.
