Crowds lined up early in front of Estadio de Villalba, eagerly awaiting the start of the 1897 Liga Nacional Puertorriquena season. On the mound was Ademar Soto for the visiting Ponce Leones and Zósimo Campos for the hometown Villalba Avancinos. In a spirited contest, the Avancinos pulled out the win, defeating the Leones by the score of 6-5. Especially impressive was Alejandro González.

With no one out in the bottom of the fourth, Leo Rosales barreled up a cutter from Ademar Soto. The result was a solo home run, putting the Avancinos in front, 6-1.

"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Rosales said after the game.
