The St. Louis Browns started the 1897 season not with a bang but with a whimper, falling 12-2 to the Washington Senators at Sportsman's Park I. Starting Pitcher Charlie Geggus, who finished 2nd in the AL in innings pitched with 404.0 in 1893, was the top performer for Washington. In 9 innings, Geggus surrendered 4 hits, while striking out 1 and walking 4. He allowed 2 runs.

The Senators benefited from a costly error in the top of the second. With Spider Clark at bat and Washington leading 1-0, the St. Louis miscue allowed Washington to plate 2 and take the lead, 3-0.
