The Gatineau Draveurs inaugurated the 1897 campaign with a disappointing 9-5 loss to the Levis Fourches at Draveurs Stadium. Levis left fielder Winn Waterman had a big impact on the outcome. He went 3-4 with 3 singles. He scored 2 times.

Levis used the timely hitting of Eudoxio Mendoza to seize the win. The first baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Fourches on top, 6-4. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We came out aggressive," said Fourches manager Gavin Dupuis. "We came out swinging the bats."
